A New Wave of Accounting Students

A New Wave of Accounting Students

There’s a strange yet remarkable trend happening in the education system, and it’s not one you might expect. However, it’s definitely one that makes sense considering the economy. More and more students are hitting the accounting books than ever before. What used to be seen as dull, boring, and tedious is now seen as stable and viable in a financial world that’s seen its ups and downs.
So where will this lead? Will this result in a world full of accountants in the next few years? How will this affect the business world, specifically the small business industry?

The Degree
Of course not every single student who goes into accounting is going to walk out with a job as an accountant. It’s just like getting an English degree – you’re not necessarily going to end up teaching English just because you have that degree.
What an accounting educational track does, though, is teach our upcoming students the importance of money and how to take care of it. Accounting has been seen as boring for, well, ever, but more and more people are realizing you just can’t ignore your finances anymore.
The wave of accounting students shows that people are finally catching on that the economy isn’t going to fix itself and you have to take control of your own money world. It’s not just young people, either; some accounting majors are returning students getting their second degree or even Master’s.

Implications
While we may not see a crazy influx of accountants any time soon, this trend is a positive step for a better economic future. There’s definitely something to be said about having a population that’s very hip to taking care of their own finances and knows how important keeping their accounts clean is!
Furthermore, since these students won’t all be accountants, they’ll be spreading across all avenues of life. They’ll go to work in the media, in business relations, and yes, even into small business.
Accounting students could potentially make great small business owners, too, though their left-brained thinking may mean they need a creative right-brained partner. But the analytical and detailed thinking that you learn during an accountant degree track can mean longer lasting small businesses. They’ll be more careful with their money, avoiding the same mistakes that sink their peers.
Of course the more small businesses that succeed the stronger the economy grows. So this simple trend in education may not seem gigantic yet, but in the future it could be the sign of something totally life-altering for the country and the world.
