What to do when Tax Extension Comes Due

April 15th is the date that strikes fear in many a taxpayer.  That is the due date for individual tax returns for US taxpayers.  Speaking as a tax professional, I can tell you that April 15th is no big deal. That’s because of a little thing called the automatic extension. The IRS knows that three and a half months is not enough time for many people to get their tax information in order, especially if they own a small business. Their answer is a six month grace period to file your tax return. And all you have to do is ask.

May, June, July, August, September October 15th, the real date that strikes fear in the hearts of many taxpayers and tax preparers too. October 15th is when your automatic extension runs out and there is no more “mister nice guy” on the part of the IRS. They want you to file your tax return and they want you to file it now.  There are no more extensions, unless you have a really compelling reason, like you are serving in the military in a combat zone.

That means for most folks October 17th is the drop dead date.  You have no more time to get your stuff together.  You are going to have to slog through it and get that tax return filled out and mailed in ASAP.

Accountants like me will be working late the week before October 15th to finish up the other procrastinators, so feel free to contact me or ask a question in theOutright Community if you need help. (Remember, setting up an Outright account and importing your recent bank and ecommerce information only takes a few minutes. Don’t delay if you’re still behind on crunching those numbers!) I don’t know that I can give you the motivation to get your taxes filed in the next couple of weeks, but  I can guarantee that when they do not receive your tax return, the IRS will be contacting you with some very motivational correspondence.
